First Lady Denise E. Tanner
She is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, the wife of Reverend Robert D. Tanner, Jr. and First Lady of Community Missionary Baptist Church in Kenner, Louisiana.
Under Sis. Tanner’s leadership and support, the Women’s Ministry at CMBC was realized and scripturally based on Titus 2:3-5. She believed that through constant teaching and the hearing of God’s word, lives would change. “God wants us to be true disciples, not double minded individuals.” The Marriage Ministry was birthed out of what she and her husband practice together. They spend private times together which has made their marriage close and exciting. They then took this concept and implemented a Marriage Ministry in the faith that other couples would practice in this manner and strengthen their marriages. The faith was also that they could help reduce the incidence of divorce amongst the saints.
Sis. Tanner’s focuses at CMBC are the Youth and Women’s Ministries. She says that children are our future and we must teach them, live according to God’s will before them, and have fun with them. We must talk to them, discipline them and listen to them. We must remember that we were once children too. She says that God’s plan for her in ministry is to be an example to young and older mothers and women of CMBC by living according to Titus 2:3-5 – “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.” She believes that most Pastors’ wives research the scripture to find out what is their role or roles, only to find that they are to be supportive, submissive and loving wives. Her goal is to show and to teach others how to reach their ultimate goal. Sis. Tanner serves as the Director of the Women’s Ministry and has birthed two sub-ministries – TGIF (Thank God I’m Free) for young ladies ages 13-21 and CIA (Christians in Action) for ladies ages 22-30.
Sis. Tanner is a strong supporter of family and family values. She believes and teaches her family that God is first in their lives, family is second and careers are third. Every morning at breakfast, they pray together and on the way to school, someone reads a scripture and someone prays. She stands on Proverbs 31:10-31 with emphasis on verses 11 and 28. Educationally, Sis. Tanner attended McDonough 35 High School in New Orleans and Xavier University of New Orleans, Louisiana. She is a certified teacher and has taught in St. Charles and St. Tammany Parishes. Her hobbies are reading, sewing and piano playing.
She and Pastor Tanner have three children; Robert, III, Carrita and Rebekah.
